Discuss the connection between the Montgomery Bus Boycott and Liberation theology and explain how you think liberation theology has had an impact on society today. Write at least 2 paragraphs. On December 1st, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on the bus. This was the start of many important movements leading towards racial freedom for blacks in American History. The Montgomery Bus Boycott was a civil-rights protest in which African Americans refused to take public transportation due to segregated seating, whites in front and blacks in the back of the bus. The boycott was lead by Martin Luther King Jr. in attempt to rule out segregation. The Liberation theology was a movement in Christian theology. The theology emphasizes liberation from social, political, and economic oppression. Martin Luther King Jr. was a huge supporter in spreading Liberation Theology because he was a pastor himself. King believed in the idea that Jesus Christ’s purpose was to “set the captives free.” Liberation theology has had an impact on society today because there aren’t any segregated areas in many states. There are some southern states that still believe in slavery due to not having an open mind, but you can’t persuade someone or a whole community that doesn’t want to be changed.
Reflection: I chose to do my reflection on the Montgomery Bus Boycott and Liberation Theory. This assignment wasn’t that hard, considering I’ve been learning about the Bus Boycott throughout my education. I felt like this assignment didn’t help me very much because we learned about the Montgomery Bus Boycott in elementary school and middle school. Each year in elementary school they played the same old video for us to watch and it was very repetitive, not really teaching me much. As soon as I entered middle school, I learned much more. In the 7th grade I had to type up a 10-page research paper on this topic explaining who Martin Luther King Jr. was and what he did for the society. So this assignment just made me watch an hour long video and type up two paragraphs explaining what the video was about and what a theory was. In addition to this assignment, I learned a bit from my fellow classmates and their intentions on answering the prompt given. My learning goals for my next assignment is to evaluate the assignment given and then answer the following questions being asked. I usually just read the first question and answer it immediately to quickly finish up the assignment so that I could finish up the next assignment that would be due. The skills I feel I need to work on more is to analyze the video/reading assignment a bit more to gain a full understanding of what’s being taught. I could do this by reading more slowly or adding captions to the video if captions are available. Another skill that I feel that I need to work on is not being repetitive. I’ve been known to repeat myself two to three times in the same paragraph if I’m in a rush to complete an assignment or to get to the minimum page count. This problem makes me confuse myself and the reader when trying to fix the problem. This assignment made me rush a bit because I needed time to find group members for a project that was due the same day. Overall I think this assignment was okay, based on the time that was needed to watch the video and answer the questions that we were given.
